Little faith in Greek is oligópiste/ oligopistían/ oligópistoi (derived from oligos and pistis). It means incredulous, i.e. lacking confidence (in Christ) hence the term ‘of little faith’.
Let’s read what the Bible refers to as ‘little faith’.
“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
“He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.”
“If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you—you of little faith?”
“Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?”
In the verses above, we see that Jesus used “Little Faith” to describe a condition of fear, worry and doubt. This is not the same term He uses to describe ‘Faith as a mustard seed’.
Let’s read, “Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and said, “Why couldn’t we throw the demon out?” “ Because you have little faith, ” He said. “ I assure you that if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Go from here to there,’ and it will go. There will be nothing that you can’t do.” Matthew 17:19-20
Jesus helped them understand that their faith was extremely small and not up to the size of a mustard seed. And there lies the difference between little faith and faith as a mustard seed.
Faith as a mustard seed is consistent, meaning it grows. That’s what seeds do! Read this post by the Esteemed P. TEA Gifts Versus Seeds.
Faith is a gift for the new creation, Ephesians 2:8 supports this statement “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God”.
Romans 12:3 goes on to explain that God has given every believer 'The measure of faith' meaning we all (as new creations) we have been given the same amount of faith, when we received the Gospel, for our salvation (Ephesians 2:8). You have the same faith as Jesus! There are no different kinds of faith depending on the role you play in the body of Christ or who you are. No! We have all been given ‘The Measure of Faith’.
Now you might look at a sister and think ‘Wow! Her faith can do more than mine can’, that’s simply because faith is like a muscle, now it’s your responsibility to build it (exercise it) to become stronger.
At this point, you might be thinking, 'how can I build my faith ?'
The answer is in the Bible, let’s read Romans 10:17 together, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” This lets us know that the measure of faith is grown, strengthened, built up by the word of God.
If you want to strengthen your faith, you must study, meditate and listen to the Word of God and also utilize important spiritual materials (books, audiotapes, videotapes, blog posts like this one and so much more). Keep yourself inundated with The Word of God. Your life is an expression of what you have on your inside, so if you keep utilizing negative materials, you will be full of negativity, but when you utilize spiritual materials, you will be full of the Spirit, your faith will be strengthened and out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water.
You need to understand that God’s plan is to build you through His Word. You’re in a world that was built by His Word, everything was structured (Katartizó) by His Word. So if you want your life to be on the rise always, you have to go through His Word.
Praise God forevermore!
